Well dammit. This means the carbs have to come off for a rebuild. Float valves are stuck on 2/4 carbs on the CB500 and several firm whacks with a screwdriver didn’t loosen them.
On a plus side she ran perfect with a new battery, outside of leaking gas...
New gaskets and float valves/seats ordered. Just a shame I have to spend an afternoon to install $20 of parts.
Such is the life with old bikes though. It is why I bought a new one - it starts right up like magic when I press the button!

Having four carbs is just the best.

For some things it is - for maintenance it is not though...

I should have added the sarcasm marker, I’ve dealt with four carbs on a few old bikes, and even subjected myself to 4 CV carbs with pod filters and open exhaust. I’ve got carb rebuilds on my bike down to ten minutes, but man do I love my fuel injected bike.

Same - I’ll never not own an old bike, but damn do I love my new bike that just starts every time.

I share the same thoughts. BSA for getting my fingers dirty and the Duc for the push button convenience .

I haven’t waded into European bikes yet. I almost bought a MotoGuzzi V7 instead of my CB500x. Give me a few more years and a thicker pocket book and I’ll buy an Italian...

It isn’t so much the initial cost as it is the upkeep. I’ve spent my purchase price on the st3 in upkeep over the 4 years I’ve owned it. Thankfully parts for the BSA are surprisingly cheap

Thars why I bought the Honda. The Guzzi was only like 2k more expensive but looking at the maintenance schedule made me shiver. Valve adjustments every 5k miles? That's how often I change the oil in my Honda!

educated advice ... buy new rubber boots. T he old boots betwee n the cards and header go hard with age, and are getting harder and harder for the carb to slide in and out.
That’s what she said, or something ...

I replaced those guys a couple years ago along with the rubbers between the carb and the air box. I makes it much easier to service than before. It's still a pain to get the carbs off and back though.
